Zbyszko wins when Lewis' concentration is disturbed by a ruckus in the Pole's corner, where Billy Sandow was protesting to Jack Curley, Zbyszko's manager, about other wrestlers coaching from the corner. Lewis glances that way and falls prey to the winning fall in 1:47:37. From this point Zbyszko claims the world title, although Earl Caddock -- who appeared earlier in the tourament before enlisting in the Army -- also claims a version. So, for that matter, did Lewis, because Frank Gotch had conferred "unofficial" world championship status upon him after refereeing a Lewis win over John Olin early in the year. |
